Matt Chat 25: Knights of the Old Republic

Posted on 13. May, 2010 by in Xbox

Greedings, young padawan! For my 25th episode, I decided to pull down a more recent vintage–Bioware’s Knights of the Old Republic, the best Star Wars game ever made and also one of the best role-playing games for console or computer. Besides its wonderful storyline, memorable characters, and intense combat, KOTOR is also celebrated as one of the first truly successful Western RPGs for consoles. As always, I hope you enjoy the episode. Please rate the video, leave comment, and consider subscribing. May the force be with you!

If you’re crashing on the PC version, the most likley problem isnt the game. My computer did crash this game, it turned out my video card was not good enough to support the game. After getting a better video card, I never had any problems.

Either you have a really creappy computer or you have a really crappy xbox. I have played this game like 30 times through on PC and never had any crash problems.

I’m not an RPG fan, but this game looks awesome.

Unfortunately, Mass Effect drops a lot of the RPG features outside of character interaction. It does ways with most of the stats, it does away with the multiple types of quests and does away with the character stats and skills and replaces them with just weapon and armour stats. Finally ME is much more combat based, with all planetary quests being linear squad based shooter fests, with no diplomacy or sneak options, just warrior ones.

I absolutely agree, it’s one of the best game for decision and quality of party characters.

Another one of my all-time favourite games!

I am rarely surprised by film or game twists but this one blind-sided me and that was probably down to feeling so immersed in the game.

Mass Effect continued where this left off as far as character interaction and decision making is concerned and I can’t wait for Mass Effect 2!!

You seem to have a talent for choosing games I love…are you hooked up to my brain via some sort of cybernetic enhancement? =oD

Yeah. I watched a dev diary on this too. It looks great as far as MMOs go.

I have the game now! So far I’ve gotten my butt kicked, befriended some drunk Sith party goers, and got my butt kicked again! I’m still in that “learn everything” mode but so far, so good.

No, not an MMO, a single player fantasy rpg. I’ve watched a developer’s diary on it and it looks pretty damn good. They appear to have placed some emphasis on the whole ‘far reaching consequences from small actions’ thing that make great crpgs great. Being Bioware, it looks a little life a fantasy KOTR. I can’t wait. The inclusion of big production cut scenes concerns me a little though! Hopefully it’s not dumbed down for cross-over appeal.

I really liked how massive this game is. Also, possibly the first wRPG that translated well on a console. Great video.

I played Mass Effect as well. Loved it, too. I’m not quite sure how you could compare either one to Tie Fighter, though it’s also a very nice game.

One of my friends (Mark) posted a video with some coverage of the Retrogamer article showing the books. I’m very happy about it! I’m sure it helped with the sales, too.

Nice choice again, Matt! I loved this when it first came out, and there is a lot of similarities between this and Mass Effect, which I completed a few months back. But best Star Wars game? I see your KotOR and raise you TIE Fighter!

PS: Did you know that your books got some coverage over here (England) in Retrogamer magazine the last couple of months? Only a paragraph each, but every little bit counts, right?

Hehe, thanks for watching. I also enjoyed HK-47. Nice change from C3PO!

Nice review meatbag. HK47 has to be one of the greatest party memebers ever created in an rpg.

Only the first part is Xbox; most of the footage is from the PC version. Thanks for watching!

Great video and great coverage, though I would have rather seen the PC version. Star Wars Rules!
