what is the education and equipment necessary to design video games?

I am generally a computer literate person, with a knack for learning languages. What I sepecifically want to do is design interactive 3D “worlds”, which can be used in other applications such as Flight Simulator. I’m not really wanting to build full blown games…just 3D architecture with interactive capability…that is, a person could walk through my worlds and see everything.
What languages, programs, and hardware do I need to do this? How long does it take to learn how to do this? Can you learn this from home, as in self-study software?

ive been learning programming for 5 years and it is still a mistery to me.
if you want to learn how, i strongly suggest getting taught by a professional for at least 5 years (hard to fully master)
i dont know many 3-D graphic programs but i know that visual basic is a extremely good programming program

Sure.
Download a copy of blender from http://www.blender.org
It’s a 3D modeling software that’s totally free. It’s perfectly suitable for what you want to do. 3D programs are not easy, and it will take some practice before you become skilled, but you will be able to create great-looking 3D scenes.
I particularly like the free book available at
http://www.blenderanimation.com/
Unlike more expensive software, blender comes with a built-in game engine that lets you add interactivity to your world, including the ability to walk through it with the joystick or keyboard.
There’s tons of great tutorials online.
Best of luck to you!
